As we reported in our January 15, 2010 post, the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) announced that it will close the Varick Street Detention Center in downtown New York City at the end of February 2010. Citing budget issues, the DHS announced that it would transfer the detainees from Varick Street Detention Center to other jails in New Jersey.
On February 1, 2010, several community groups, legal service providers and advocacy organizations issued a written statement to the DHS expressing their support for timely release of detainees at the Varick Street Detention Center.
We will continue to follow this story and provide any additional updates or information as it becomes available.
